This animation shows how the Adobe RGB 1998 color space (depicted in white) used as the U.S. Prepress default in PhotoShop 6.0 maps to the smaller sRGB color space standard put forth by Microsoft and HP.

The difference in size between the larger white wire frame the Adobe RGB 1998 gamut and color wire frame depicting sRGB gamut represents the extra range of colors Adobe RGB 1998 can record.

Because computer monitors have a gamut very close to the size of sRGB colorspace it is well suited for photos which will be displayed on web pages. However sRGB does not map well to CYMK color space as this comparison of the sRGB gamut with that of an HP 3500 CP wide-format ink jet printer using glossy photo paper illustrates.

A comparison of Adobe RGB 1998 and the HP 3500 CP color spaces shows only minor clipping in dark magenta and blue colors.

CONCLUSION: Adobe RGB is a far better working space than sRBG if you plan to print the file.
