Chuck Gardner's Photography Class
Part Three - Digital Photography Basics

Batteries

Batteries are an important consideration in the digital realm. Digital cameras use a great deal of power and several sets of rechargable batteries are needed. I use five sets. Some camera brands, such as Canon and Sony which use expensive, proprietary Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries. These are great batteries which can be recharged without a memory effect, the cost of buying enough batteries to spend a day in the field shooting can be considerable. In my opinion, cameras which allow the use of rechargeable Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) AA batteries are the most versatile and economical in the long term. Ni-Cds will not work in digital cameras as the current demands are just too high. High grade Alkaline batteries can be used, but will be depleted quickly.
