3) Isolate and simplify:

Once you determine what the center of interest is and have located it at one of magic thirds, eliminate anything in the frame which distracts from it. Do this by cropping in the camera (move closer or zoom in) or by changing your camera position.


For example, in this photo I cropped out the distracting light background on the left, and darkened the tone of the tabletop so the viewer's eye would be draw to the lighter yellow tone in the boat. I also removed the distracting cyan candy wrapper on the in the lower right.

Distracting backgrounds can be minimized by shooting down on the subject from an elevated position, or shooting up from an very low camera position. If it doesn't help draw the viewer's eye to what you want the center of interest to be get rid of it. Less is more.
