Chuck Gardner's Photography Class
Part Two C - Posing Groups
by Chuck Gardner

For static shots of large indoor groups (e.g., class photos) show the people on the right side of a group how to point their right foot forward and slightly out to the side, then showing the ones on the left to do the opposite. Then tell all to shift their weight to the rear leg. Tell the men to button their coats and get out of the hands in front "fig leaf" pose. These few simple instructions can turn an unruly mob of 50 people into symmetrical group. Then all you need to do is find a high camera position to take the picture. Use a chair, ladder, or balcony if available.

The best lighting for a large group is an overcast day to avoid harsh shadows and squinting. If indoors the use of a second off-camera flash will improve the lighting, but if the group is large aim it at the opposite side to avoid a "hot"spot.
