Posing Couples
The rules for photographing men and women apply to couples and
small groups. In general its best to build a picture around the man's masculine
pose then add the woman to his
right with her right foot forward. Standing together his head and shoulders will
be angled towards the center. If photographed alone the woman's head would be
turned and tipped towards her shoulder, but in this situation you want her to
tip her head slightly towards the center, but not so far that you loose the
short lighting on her face. The two heads must be near each other to avoid
creating two centers interest. If there is a big difference in heights raise
the smaller of the two using a stool, phone books, etc.
Posing Small Groups
As you increase the number of people in a
photograph composition becomes as important as posing and lighting. Encourage
the people in the group move close together. If you have the opportunity have
the everyone put their outside foot forward and shift their weight to the inside
back leg. This will naturally shift everyone's posture and heads towards the
center and align their shoulders relative to the center line. Tipping their
heads slightly to the center will also strengthen the composition.
If you are photographing the people at a dinner table get the people on
one side of the table to move and stand behind those sitting on the other side.
If they are couples ask the men to stand and let all the women sit, arranging
the couples so the men are standing behind their partners. Ask the men to button
their suit jackets and remove the table center piece if its in the way. Odds are
someone will blink so take two pictures.
